The Edge of the Outback - Wilcannia to Broken Hill Wilcannia

Friday, July 23rd 1999

Off to Broken Hill today. Walked Tara first of course along a rough track behind the caravan park. She gets so involved in the new smells she finds that she doesn't listen to me which worries me sometimes, but she looks very cute, galloping along with her nose on the ground and her tail up and twitching with excitement.

My friends of the road left before I did, but I passed them on the road after about three quarters of an hour. I had intended to stop along the road, but except for taking a couple of photos and depositing my last remaining apple in the fruit fly bin I ended up driving straight to Broken Hill. The sky was quite overcast and the day a bit windy and uninviting. A view of the lake

I was quite tired by the time I reached Broken Hill and got settled at the Lake View Caravan Park (yes, there is a view of a lake). I made some lunch and sat and read for a bit, then Tara and I walked into town (about 3 kms according to the advertisment for the caravan park) and bought a pie for tea and a couple of books. The walk was quite interesting, past a mine with machinery and buildings on the skyline. Lots of miner's cottages too.

After tea I was able to collect my email, which was good as I had quite a few letters and I spent some time on replies before having an early night.
