Unhide it using "View-Options-Show all Files" Right click msdos.sys and select "Properties". Uncheck "Read Only" check box and click OK. Right click msdos.sys and select "Open with" "Notepad" or some other text editor. Don't change padding characters at end of file. Some applications require the file to be at lesat 1024 bytes long. Make changes under "Options" line in msdos.sys - To boot into DOS: Change "BootGUI=1" to "BootGUI=0". If that line does not exist simply add it. To run win95 just type "win" at dos prompt. - To boot into the old dos after doing a dos+win31 upgrade: Add "BootMulti=1" in msdos.sys. Then if you press F4 when you see "Starting Windows" at bootup it will boot into the old dos. If you press F8 you will get a bootup menu. - If you're in the old dos and need to change any of the settings edit "msdos.w40" not "msdos.sys". - To get a menu of boot options at startup add "BootMenu=1" to msdos.sys. Menu will appear for about 30 seconds at bootup. - To change the time the menu appears use "BootMenuDelay=10" for 10 seconds, for example. - To eliminate the windows logo at bootup and be able to see the bootup menu add the line "Logo=0" to msdos.sys * Check Current IP Address and Gateway in Win95/98 Start, Run winipcfg * Batch Files - Uses DOS. Can even run programs simultaneously. - By default batch commands are multitasked. To execute sequentially add the command "start /w". - To close a batch file window when the program has finished end the batch file with command "cls" on the last line without a C.R. * To Test Network Operation Two PC's can talk to each other and run diagnosctics. Run "net diag" on one workstation which becomes the listener. The run "win diag on the other to become the machine which will do the testing. * To install Win98 in an "Over The Top" installation From the installation CD run: setup /nd * To backup win95 or Win98 from C: to a new D: hard disk format D: with format d:/s/u and then go to Windows DOS prompt and do: xcopy c: d:/s/e/h/k/r/c This MUST be dont from a DOS window in Windows. Not from a plain Win95/98 DOS boot floppy. It seems to use xcopy32 by the way ;-) Make sure you copy the original msdos.sys somewhere safe! Because if the new hard disk does not boot you will find the new msdos.sys has to be overwritten with the old one. Because for some reason windows does not seem to copy properly or overwrites msdos.sys sometimes. * If Internet Explorer does not have the "Windows Update" option available or refuses to update from Microsoft update website: Start|Run|regedit. Find "NoWindowsUpdate" key. Change it from 1 to 0. Exit Internet Explorer and run it again and try Update now from the update menu or the Microsoft website. You do not even have to reboot Windows for this to work. You can also run Windows update from Start|Run|wupdmgr.exe which launches Internet Explorer and goes to Microsoft website automatically. * Bootlog. BOOTLOG.PRV and BOOTLOG.TXT are in c:\ but often hidden. So use ATTRIB -H *.* to unhide them
