The following sections provide general installation and operating instructions for MG100. Be sure to read these sections carefully before proceeding with installation and operation. HARDWARE INSTALLATION Hardware installation of MG100 has been made easy due to the built-in Plug-and-Play capability of all PCI devices. There are no jumpers on the board that you have to worry about. Also, because of its short length, the MG100 board will not be obstructed by any device on the mainboard located in line with the PCI slots (e.g. the CPU fan and heatsink). To install your MG100 board: Make absolutely sure that your PC power is off. It is recommended that you physically unplug the electrical power cord from the PC power supply. Then proceed to open the cover of your PC to expose the interface slots on the motherboard. Remove the screw and the backpanel plate for the selected PCI slot. Plug the MG100 board into this slot. Push the card into the slot firmly. Make sure that the card is seated correctly as far into the slot as possible. Check that the outstanding parts of the MG100 hardware do not touch any adjacent boards or devices in the system. Secure the interface card to the computer case with the retaining screw and close the computer cover. After you have successfully installed the MG100 board in your computer, you must make the wiring connections to your video and audio source(s). The MG100 interface card has two video and two audio connectors. Connections are shown in REF _Ref439048895 \h Figure 1 REF _Ref439048913 \p \h below. Connect the Composite Video Input or SVideo Input to your VCR, LDP or Camcorder video output. The use of S-Video or Component input connection will provide higher quality video from the start. See Software Operation instructions on page PAGEREF _Ref481489243 \h 18 for more information on how to specify the correct video input using MG100 software. There should be placed a MG100 board picture. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 1. MG100 board (revision 1.x) connectors SOFTWARE INSTALLATION You are now about to install the MG100 software onto your system. The software installation process is slightly different for Windows95/98 than for WindowsNT and Windows 2000. In the case of Windows98 the installation is performed in one or two simple steps, while in WindowsNT and Windows 2000 only one step is required. Sections REF _Ref369350364 \n 3.1 and REF _Ref357175155 \n 3.2 cover the setup process for Windows95, including details specific to the OSR2 version of Windows95 and Windows98. Important notes for Windows NT users: Make sure you have enough access rights to the system (Administrator or equivalent) to install low-level drivers on your computer. If necessary, ask your system administrator for assistance. You can skip the Windows95/98 specific part of the installation and proceed directly to section REF _Ref357175637 \n 3.3. Plug and Play driver installation in Windows95 and Windows98 In both versions of Windows95 and Windows98, the first required step is to tell the system about the new hardware that you have just installed. Since the MG100 board is truly Plug and Play, Windows95 will automatically detect its presence and display the message shown in REF _Ref345386290 \h Figure 2. The OSR2 and Windows98 version will display the message shown in REF _Ref392097922 \h Figure 3. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 2. New Hardware driver installation dialog in Windows95 Select Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer and click OK. When prompted for the driver location, type in the path where you are installing the software from (e.g. E:\). Or click on the Browse button to locate MG100 software using disk drives and directories tree. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 3. New Hardware driver installation dialog in OSR2 and Windows98 In OSR2 and Windows98 simply click on the Next > button. The operating system will search the diskette and CD-ROM drives automatically. If the search has failed, you will need to browse drives and directories tree (by pressing the Have Disk or Other Locations buttons) to find the drivers manually. Finally, clicking OK (or Finish in the case of OSR2 / 98) will complete the first step by copying and installing the low-level (Plug and Play) device driver. Important: This phase of the installation is very critical for correct MG100 software functionality. Failure to complete this step will lead to error messages being displayed by MG100 software and some of its functions being disabled. Please refer to the REF _Ref357175155 \* MERGEFORMAT Installing the Plug and Play driver manually and REF _Ref358017107 \* MERGEFORMAT TROUBLESHOOTING sections for possible remedies. If the installation has been performed exactly as described above, skip the next section and proceed directly to section REF _Ref357175637 \n 3.3 Installing the Plug and Play driver manually If the low-level driver installation procedure was carried out correctly, there would be no need to know how to install the driver manually since this would be done automatically in accordance with the process described above. However, in real life, things can go wrong, partially due to the fact that those devices, which do not have the corresponding drivers supplied with Windows95/98 still require some user interaction. Unfortunately, it can be rather difficult to correct a mistake during the initial installation. Listed below are some examples of common mistakes: You have chosen the Do not install a driver... line in the above dialog. CD-ROM was unavailable during Windows 95/98 startup, or the drive was not functioning properly. You have aborted the manual installation process by pressing the Cancel button. When you have installed the MG100 software before the installation of the board itself. If you are working in Windows 95/98, you will need to reboot the system, and the driver will be installed. But in case of Windows 2000 operating system, you will see the following message box: In these cases, you need to help Windows locate and install the appropriate drivers because the REF _Ref361587098 \* MERGEFORMAT New Hardware driver installation dialog shown in REF _Ref345386290 \h Figure 2 or REF _Ref392097922 \h Figure 3 will appear only once - during the first installation. You can do this manually by performing the simple steps below: Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 4. Locating an unidentified MG100 device Run Windows95/98 Control Panel and double-click on the System icon. Click on the Device Manager tab to see a dialog similar to the one shown in REF _Ref357762368 \h Figure 4. Locate and double-click on the Other devices branch, shown with the yellow question mark (?). You should see a device labeled PCI Multimedia Device among the other devices in the group (see REF _Ref357762368 \h Figure 4). This is a generic name assigned to MG100 by the system. Double-click on this line to bring up the device properties sheet (as shown in REF _Ref357764212 \h Figure 5). Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 5. Unidentified MG100 device properties sheet Select the Driver tab and click on the Change Driver (Update Driver in the OSR2) button. In Windows95: When prompted to select hardware type, select Other devices and click OK. Click on the Have Disk button and specify the location of the MG100 installation files. If necessary, use the Browse button to locate the software. In OSR2 and Windows98: The CD-ROM drive will searched for the necessary files automatically. If not found you will need to specify proper location using the Browse button. After the required files are located, choose the MG100 line and click OK several times to install the driver and restart the system. When the Plug and Play driver is installed, the generic PCI Multimedia Device labeled with a question mark will disappear from the Windows95/98 Device Managers hardware list. Instead, the new device, named MG100, will appear in the Sound, video and game controllers branch. Should you ever need to view or change the properties of the MG100 hardware in Windows95/98, refer to this device line in the Device Managers list. Normally, you will not need to do this, except during troubleshooting. Main software installation The main software installation process consists of the installation of the remaining medium and low level drivers and high level application software. This can be accomplished by simply running the SETUP program from the MG100 CD-ROM. You can do this in two ways: Using the My Computer window or Windows Explorer: Click on the drive icon containing the installation media (e.g. E:) Find the program SETUP.EXE in the list of files in the directory window. Double-click on it. Using the Run command: Click on the button on the Windows95/98 toolbar. Select the Run command In the Command field type in the drive letter of the installation media followed by colon, back-slash and SETUP.EXE (e.g. E:\SETUP.EXE) or use the Browse button to locate and select SETUP.EXE. Press Enter. The setup program screens are self-explanatory. Follow the instructions to specify the destination directory and the software components to be installed (see the next section for details). The setup program will automatically create the MG100 software group and the program items and will also update the system registry database with the necessary keys and values. Note: Upon completion of the software installation process you must reboot your system to make all changes effective, if you are working under Windows 2000 or Windows 95/98 operating system. In case of Windows NT operating system it is not required. UNINSTALLATION You can remove the MG100 software from your computer and delete all traces that the hardware had ever been installed in your computer. It is recommended to uninstall MG100 before each repeated installation to ensure, that the Windows registry does not get corrupted by remnant data of previous installations. Uninstallation can be done in one or two steps (for Windows95/98 only), which reverse the steps performed during the installation. The first step is to uninstall the high level software, which was installed. To achieve this, do either of the following: Launch Windows Control Panel and select the Add/Remove Programs icon and double-click on the MG100 line among the list of the installed software. After receiving a confirmation from you, the uninstaller will delete the application and some of the driver files, destroy the MG100 software folder and remove all the registry keys, which were created by MG100 software. The second step (required only for Windows95/98) will be to clear the Windows memory of the MG100 hardware. Perform the following actions: Launch the Windows 95/98 Control Panel and double-click the System icon. Select the Device Manager tab and expand the branch named Sound, video and game controllers by double-clicking on the corresponding line. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 6. Removing MG100 Plug and Play driver From the list of the installed multimedia devices choose MG100 and click on the Remove button (as shown in REF _Ref354778182 \h Figure 6). Confirm your action and the MG100 low-level software will be removed from your system. To remove the hardware, shutdown Windows95/98 now. Then open your computer case and carefully unscrew and remove the MG100 board. Note: If you do not remove the hardware after the described uninstallation, the next time when you start Windows95/98 you will be prompted to install the drivers for MG100 card again. SOFTWARE OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS The MG100 software can be divided into two major functional parts, as follows: REF _Ref357778210 \* MERGEFORMAT MG100 capture, playback and editing application Other utilities Each part is explained in detail below. MG100 capture, playback and editing application This section describes the operation of the MG100 capture and playback application named MG100. The MG100s user interface is quite simple and intuitive. Additionally, every button has a small tooltip assigned to it. Whenever you pass a mouse cursor over any of the buttons, you will see a short explanation of its function. The MG100 application works in one of two main modes: MPEG Capture and MPEG Playback/Editing. The switching is done by pressing the corresponding tiny button in the bottom right corner of the panel (see REF _Ref354787443 \h Figure 7 on page PAGEREF _Ref392329219 \h 19). Switches the MG100 application into MPEG Capture mode. Switches the MG100 application into MPEG Playback/Editing mode. The current operation mode is memorized by the program. It will be selected automatically the next time you launch MG100. In the case of improper hardware installation only the Playback mode will be functional. The following sections describe these modes and show each of the control types available. MPEG Capture mode Real time video and audio capturing and encoding is the main purpose of MG100. The capture mode is selected by using the small buttons on the right. The selection determines the operation mode of the program. By selecting MPEG Capture mode, you can capture fully ISO/IEC 11172 compliant, IPB-frames MPEG1 video and MPEG layer II audio streams in real time. The possible applications of these files include video archiving, recording them to Video CD, transmission across networks, and many more. When in the MPEG Capture mode, the application main panel changes as shown in REF _Ref354787443 \h Figure 7. The rest of this section describes the basic capture controls, commands accessible from programs menu and various video and audio settings accessible via configuration dialog. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 7. MG100 in the MPEG Capture mode The MG100s window caption in REF _Ref354787443 \* MERGEFORMAT Figure 7 shows the current capture mode (MPEG), output file name and location. The file name extension is attached or replaced automatically depending on the selected file type: .MPG or .MP2 for MPEG capturing mode (see also MPEG Video parameters description on page PAGEREF _Ref353117388 \h 23). If a new file name was not specified, the most recently used name or the default one will be used. The commands in the File menu let you specify the name of a file and exit the application. The file name can be defined before capturing by using the Save As command. The new file selection dialog will appear and let you specify another file name and location. The output file name shown in the application window caption will remain unchanged and will be representing a new, non-existing file. If you want to close the main application panel, press the Exit command. The Capture menu contains all necessary commands to control the video and audio capture process. Most of the commands found here are duplicated and usually accessed with the control buttons on the MG100s main panel that are similar to those found on most VCRs. In addition to the basic capture control commands this menu contains Option command that brings the MG100 Capture Properties multi-page configuration dialog for the capture mode, and Capture Limit command (see the chapter REF _Ref392599779 \n 5.1.2.2 for more details) and a line that switches the application into Playback mode (see page PAGEREF _Ref357778210 18 for explanation about different functional modes of the MG100 application). The Record button starts the MPEG capture process. During the capture a status bar ( REF _Ref354787443 \* MERGEFORMAT Figure 7) displays the elapsed capture time in the hours:minutes:seconds format, the number of actually captured and dropped frames (separated by the forward slash / ), and the current file size in megabytes. The Pause button pauses the MPEG capture process for a while. The capture process can be resumed quickly by depressing this button. The pause function allows for seamless concatenation of multiple source video segments into a single output file. Also, this button can be used for instant capture start, if pressed before the Record button and then depressed. The Stop button stops (terminates) the MPEG video and audio capture process and closes the output file(s). The Settings button brings up the MG100 Capture Properties multi-page configuration dialog for the capture mode as shown in the series of figures in the following section. It allows you to adjust video and audio source properties as well as the full set of MPEG video and audio encoding parameters. See sections REF _Ref354790019 \n 5.1.2.1 for the detailed description of the dialogs pages and control elements. The Preview button toggles the status of the video source preview. When this button is pressed, the MG100 program displays live video preview in a special window on the computer screen. As soon as the button is depressed, the video preview window will disappear. Finally, the About menu allows you to see the information about MG100 hardware and software versions. In case of troubles, please report all displayed information to Darim Technical Support to make the troubleshooting process faster and more efficient. Additionally, the same menu provides you with ability to access the MG100 page on the Internet to catch the latest news about the product and download the latest software. This command requires the Internet access capability and any Web Browser software installed and configured properly. MPEG capture control dialogs This section will describe various control parameters available in MPEG capture mode. The most of it devoted to MG100 Capture Properties dialog that is shown in the following figures. This is a multi-page dialog where each of the pages controls a special group of parameters. By clicking on the corresponding tab, you can access different pages of the dialog, each of them described in greater detail below. Section REF _Ref392599779 \r \h 5.1.2.2 on page PAGEREF _Ref392599779 \h 29 will cover another control dialog that lets you set up a limit for MPEG capture process. The MG100 Capture Properties dialog in MPEG capture mode The first page of the MG100 Capture Properties dialog is shown in REF _Ref481405815 \h Figure 8. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 8. Video input parameters control dialog The Video page of the dialog gives you complete control over the incoming analog video signal. Firstly, depending on the video connections done during the hardware installation, you may choose either Composite or S-Video video inputs by clicking the corresponding line on the Source dropdown list. Then, select the video standard that is used in your country by accessing the Standard dropdown list right below. Currently, two video standards are supported: NTSC and PAL. The Offset X parameter allows you to shift the captured video image horizontally. You can customize this value, for example, to get rid of unwanted noise or black stripes on the image borders. Note that the image resolution always remains the same. The sliders on the right allow for adjustment of the incoming video signal. There are four controls: Hue -- adjusts the phase of the video signal color. By moving this slider in both directions you can change the tone of the input video signal. Increase to make skin tones become greenish. Decrease to make skin tones become purplish. The default value corresponds to normal color tones. This control has effect only for NTSC video. Saturation -- adjusts the color intensity of the signal. Setting it to the minimum will produce a Black & White picture. Setting to the maximum will produce a picture with very bright (and often distorted) color spots. Contrast -- controls the difference between the brightest and darkest place of the picture. The minimum level of contrast is a dark gray picture with indistinguishable details. The default setting corresponds to medium contrast. Brightness -- adjusts the overall picture intensity. Has no effect on color. Affects only the gray level of the picture between minimum (complete black) and maximum (almost white). Important: Some of the video properties controlled by these sliders may strongly affect (both increasing and decreasing) the resulting perceptual quality of the MPEG video for the same compressed video bitrate. So, if you are not satisfied with the visual quality of the just captured MPEG file, do not rush to increase the bitrate. Instead, try changing video brightness, contrast, and saturation parameters. It may lead to significant improvement of visual quality. If you get confused with any of these video input controls, press the Default button to restore the standard values that provide adequate results in most of the cases. Note that all basic Video input parameters described here take affect immediately, without need for pressing OK. This enables you to quickly adjust all parameters as needed while monitoring the changes through video preview window and press the OK or Apply button to memorize the settings when the desired result is achieved. The MPEG Video page of the MG100 Capture Properties dialog is shown below in REF _Ref353367232 \h Figure 9. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 9. MPEG Video parameters selection dialog Select the MPEG Video tab to set the basic MPEG capturing and encoding parameters. The Bitrate field specifies the target compressed data rate in Kbits/sec for MPEG video streams. Higher values usually produce better quality while consuming more storage space. However, the difference becomes hardly noticeable after certain saturation threshold that depends on video content. Note that you can change the video bitrate to any arbitrary value within the allowed range from 196 to 4,000 Kbits/sec. The video bitrate controls the size of the data dynamically increasing or reducing the compression ratio (and thus affecting the image quality). The given bitrate value is quite accurate and can be used to calculate the disk space requirements in advance. For example, to estimate the amount of disk space required for one minute of MPEG program stream file in Kbytes (given the video and audio bitrates in Kbits/sec), use the following formula: 1 min of MPEG (Kbytes) = (Video Bitrate (Kbps) + Audio Bitrate (Kbps)) * (60 / 8) It is advisable to add about 5% overhead to the above result. The overhead is caused by the addition of program stream synchronization and timing data for video and audio tracks. The Frame Size dropdown list allows the user to change the resolution of the destination MPEG video. The default resolution settings are 352x240 SIF (the maximum for NTSC) or 352x288 SIF (maximum for PAL). The other possible frame resolutions are SIF square pixel, QSIF, and QSIF square pixel. The SIF and QSIF resolutions are used when the target playback path is a computer monitor. In this case the image aspect ratio corresponds to the aspect ratio of the computer screen. The SIF and QSIF square pixel resolutions (160x112 for NTSC or 160x144 for PAL) should be used when the target playback path is a TV screen. In this case the image aspect ratio corresponds to the aspect ratio of the TV screen. When the Advanced button is pressed, an additional video parameters control dialog will appear as shown in REF _Ref481408185 \h Figure 10. This dialog allows you to specify the parameters that are used during the MPEG1 encoding process. The GOP length field specifies the total frame number in a Group of Pictures (GOP). The possible frame range is from 1 up to 63 frames, the default value is 15 frames. The Number of B frames field provides you with information about the number of B-frames in a GOP. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 10. Advanced MPEG video parameters The Sequence header freq. field shows the frequency of sequence headers embedded into MPEG1 stream. In case of 0 value, the sequence header will be placed only once at the beginning of the stream. If this value is equal to 1, 2, 3, etc., the sequence header will be located each time correspondingly before the second, third GOP. The largest component of an MPEG1 stream is a Group of Pictures (or GOP), which is self-contained unit comprised of one I-frame, and its sibling P and B frames. The I-frame is the first frame that determines the whole picture; all other frames make reference to it. The Scene change checkbox allows to detect scene changes in the sequence. In a result to a scene change, a new closed GOP will be started, in other words when a sudden scene change occurs, the first frame of the GOP will always be I-frame, despite of the current frame at that moment, and consecutive frames will depend on this I-frame. Thus the picture quality is improved, but the GOP size will be increased as the number of I-frames is added. The VBR checkbox specifies variable bitrate. The host selects the video quality and the bitrate depends on this selection and the incoming video. When this checkbox is checked, the Bitrate field in the MPEG Video dialog will be disabled (it will be grayed). Note: This VBR option will be activated only if the MPEG Video Only or MPEG Video/Audio Separate mode is selected in the MPEG Muxer dialog. In other modes it will disabled. The Quality field allows to define the picture quality; it is enabled when the VBR checkbox is checked. In case of a constant bitrate, each frame in MPEG1 stream is encoded with different quality depending on its contents, i.e. richness and details. When the variable bitrate is selected, all frames will be encoded with the same constant quality. You may specify the desired frame quality according to your needs. The possible quality range is from 2 up to 31. If the specified value is 2, the best possible quality can be obtained. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 11. MPEG Audio parameters selection dialog The MPEG Audio page lets you specify all parameters related to the audio compression. Start by selecting the desired audio Mode and Sampling Frequency. A higher sampling frequency means wider audio dynamic range and thus higher quality. However, higher sampling frequency results in fewer bits of compressed MPEG data per audio sample. Different applications or audio sources may require different approaches in handling mono or stereo audio. The following modes of audio recording and compression are supported: Mono -- regular monaural audio. Select this mode if only one channel of the audio cable is connected to the source. Stereo -- typical stereo audio (e.g. music). Select this mode if both channels of the audio cable are connected to the source. In contrast to the video bitrate, where an arbitrary value can be specified, the audio bitrate can be set only to several discrete values, as specified by MPEG standard (ISO/IEC 11172-3) for layer II audio compression. The list of the allowed bitrates also depends on whether the Stereo or another Mode option is selected. The Level sliders allow you to control the volume of the recorded audio signal. You may adjust them manually by moving these sliders up or down. The sliders are calibrated in decibels (dB). The possible level range is from 0 up to 22.5 dB. Each step of the slider corresponds to 1.5 dB. Finally, depending on the audio input connections, you may choose either Line or Mic audio input; just check the corresponding radio button of the audio input. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 12. MPEG Multiplexer stream type selection dialog Select the MPEG Muxer tab to set the stream type of the MPEG Multiplexer. The Stream Type dropdown list selects the type of MPEG stream (output format) be produced. The following table lists all possible stream types and gives a brief explanation. Stream TypeDescriptionFile extensionsMPEG Video OnlyElementary MPEG video stream as specified in the ISO/IEC11172-2 standard..MPGMPEG Video/Audio SeparateElementary MPEG1 video and uncompressed PCM audio stored into two separate files with the common name but different extensions. .MPG and .MP2 MPEG System Stream Video and audio elementary streams multiplexed into single system stream with extra information for strict video and audio synchronization..MPG Video CD Similar to the above but subject to certain requirements is described in the White Book specification (fixed video and audio bitrates and various system layer parameters).MPG Important notes: When the Video CD Stream Type is selected, the video Bitrate and Size fields will be grayed (disabled) in the MPEG Video page. The audio Bitrate and other parameters (see REF _Ref481639658 \h \* MERGEFORMAT Figure 11) will be also restricted to a single selection. Video CD (White Book) specification restricts all of these parameters to certain pre-defined values. When the MPEG System Stream type is selected, the VBR checkbox will be disabled as well. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 13. Template selection dialog The Template page lets you select existing MPEG capture and encoding parameters templates (presets) or create new ones. The templates contain all settings for every option in all other pages in this dialog, so they come handy when you need to memorize and restore the optimal video, audio and MPEG encoding settings for specific video/audio source or a clip. All currently available templates are listed in the space on the left. If you want to store the entire set of the current parameters to system registry for later use, type in a new template name and press the Save button. The MPEG, Video, and Audio checkboxes on the left let you specify various parameters for saving. To select (load) any of them simply double-click on its name in the list or press the Load button. Note that doing this will change all parameters in other pages of the dialog so it may be advisable to review them before continuing (pressing OK). To delete any template from the registry, select it from the list and press the Remove button. Important: Since the templates store the complete set of parameters (including video brightness, contrast, etc.) it is advisable to find the optimal values and store them into a separate template for each particular working material. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 14. Info capture properties dialog Finally, the last Info page of the Capture Properties dialog provides you with complete information about all parameters that have been specified. The following page of the Capture Properties multi-page dialog shown in REF _Ref483969999 \h Figure 15 will appear, if Darims M-Filter hardware and software are installed. M-Filter page provides you with professional video quality enhancement filters. It may help you to improve compressed video quality on sharp edges of objects or highly contrast details of the image (e.g. fireworks). You can enable or disable only one of the provided filters by checking the corresponding radio button. Refer to M-Filter Users Guide for more information about the filtering possibilities and available options that you can achieve using this tab. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 15. M-Filter settings dialog embedded into MG100 software Setting a limit for the capture process In certain cases it is very useful to limit the amount of data captured, for example, to prevent the target media from becoming full. You can do this by selecting Capture limit command from the MG100 programs Capture menu. You will see the dialog shown in REF _Ref452609304 \h Figure 16. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 16. Setting the capture limit This dialog allows you to specify the ending point of the capture process in three different formats: Mbytes, Minutes or Seconds. The capture process will be paused automatically as soon as the current limit is reached. Note that you can change or Disable the capture limit at any time during the capture process. When the capture limit is in effect, the corresponding line in the Capture menu is checked. Playback/Editing mode It is very important to be able to see (and hear) the clip that you have just captured. The MG100 application lets you do this almost instantly by implementing the Playback mode. This mode can be selected by pressing the button. Another important capability, that was added to MG100, allows for MPEG file Editing by cutting off unnecessary parts and joining multiple fragments into a single file. The editor implements a very simple and intuitive user interface integrated with playback controls. This lets you locate the desired position in the MPEG file quickly and accurately. However, the most important and attractive feature of the MPEG editor is its capability to edit and output strictly Video CD compliant files. Other kinds of the MPEG streams that confirm to ISO/IEC 11172 standard can be edited. The rest of this section describes the operation of the player and editor in detail. Important note: The MG100 program does not perform the MPEG1 video and audio decoding by itself. In order to successfully perform playback and/or editing operations on MPEG1 clips, you need to have any MPEG1 decoding hardware and/or software that is comes with MCI driver or Microsoft DirectShow"!-compatible components (filters). Otherwise, an error message will be displayed and all playback editing controls will be disabled. Refer to the REF _Ref358017107 \h \* MERGEFORMAT TROUBLESHOOTING section for more details about this problems and possible remedies. Playback controls When MG100 is switched to the Playback/Editing mode, the application main panel changes as shown in REF _Ref452656739 \h Figure 17. The most recently captured MPEG file will be opened by default. Other files can be opened through the File menu. When a file is opened, the clip length scale will be re-scaled according to represent the entire clip duration. Also, the current position slider will be set to the very first frame. The blue bar in the length scale represents the fragment chosen for playback and editing. Immediately after loading the entire clip will be selected automatically. The position slider can be moved along the scale with mouse or keyboard arrows. The current selection can be marked by positioning the slider to the desired point in the file and pressing the Mark In or Mark Out buttons (see the next section for details). Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 17. MG100 in the playback/editing mode Note that the MG100 application does not play MPEG files by itself. Instead, it relies on the presence of the corresponding MCI playback drivers. MPEG files can be played through any hardware or software MPEG video and audio decoder that comes with the compatible MCI driver for playback using standard Windows Media Player program. The performance and capabilities of these players depend on the implementation type and manufacturer/model. If more than one compatible players is available, you can choose the most suitable one. When you run MG100 for the very first time after the installation, it collects the data about all MCI drivers in the system and stores the list in a private registry entry, so the next time it will start up faster and use only those devices that have responded positively to the query. Important notes: It is possible that one or more MCI devices will cause a General Protection Fault during the query operation. In this case, the MG100 program will be terminated also. Simply restart the application, it will automatically avoid using the faulty MCI device the next time. Additionally, you may permanently disable any unwanted MCI driver by launching Windows Control Panel, clicking the Multimedia icon, switching to Advanced (or Devices) tab, and expanding Media Control Devices branch. Then, double-click on the desired MCI driver name, select Do not use this Media Control device and click OK. You may need to restart Windows in order to make the changes take effect. To force MG100 program to re-scan all MCI devices (for example, if you have just added a new one), use the Update device list command from the Device menu. To configure the selected device/driver, click on the Configure command in the same menu and the device-specific dialog will appear. Note that some drivers cannot be configured this way, in that case, the corresponding message will be shown. Refer to documentation that came with your hardware and software for more information how to change the player configuration. The following describes all the available playback controls. The controls are accessible through the corresponding commands in the Playback menu or a set of VCR-style buttons displayed on the MG100 panel. The buttons are described in detail below: The Play button starts or resumes the MPEG playback process. The status bar ( REF _Ref452656739 \h Figure 17) shows the elapsed playback time (or the current playback position) in the hours:minutes:seconds format. Note that the playback area can be limited to the current selection if the Play Selection option in the Playback menu is checked. The Pause button pauses or resumes the MPEG playback process. Playback can be also resumed from the next available frame by clicking on the Play button. The Stop button stops playback of the current movie clips and resets position slider back to the first frame. The Step Back button retreats to the previous available frame in the MPEG file. Note that not all MCI playback devices support this command correctly. The Step Forward button advances to the next available frame in the MPEG file. Note that not all MCI playback devices support this command correctly. The Go to Start button moves the current position slider to the beginning of the active selection (if available) or the entire movie clip. If a segment of the clip is selected, press this button again to move to the beginning of the entire file. The Go to End button moves the current position slider to the end of the active selection (if available) or the entire movie clip. If a segment of the clip is selected, press this button again to move to the end of the entire file. Other commands in the Playback menu include Loop and Play Selection toggles that define the way the files will be played. The Loop option enables automatic repetition of playback for the given file or its fragment (defined by the active selection). The Play Selection option restricts the playback area to the active selection. You can enable automatic playback of the currently loaded file from any other OLE-compatible Windows application using Copy Object command from the Copy menu and then pasting the object to another application. Note this option requires a MPEG playback software registered in the system as an OLE server (the target application will become an OLE client). Most of todays MCI devices (including Microsoft ActiveMovie"! and DirectShow"!) can be used for this purpose. Editing controls This section describes controls and commands relevant to the MPEG editor built into the MG100 application. These commands, combined with playback controls described above, allow for simple and intuitive editing of MPEG movie clips. All frequently used commands are accessible through the editing toolbar placed between the menu bar and the position slider. Some buttons also have the equivalent command in the menu. Each of the buttons in the toolbar and their menu equivalents (if available) are described in detail below. Brings up a file selection dialog to open a new file for playback and, if possible, editing. Corresponds to the Open command in the File menu. Saves the currently opened file with a new name and re-opens it for playback and editing. This operation does not leave the copy of the original file, instead the file will be renamed or moved to another location. Saves the frame currently shown in the playback window into the Windows Bitmap (.BMP) file after prompting for its name and location. This button has no menu command equivalent. Copies the currently selected fragment of the movie clip to the clipboard. The fragment size does not matter since only the index information about the starting and ending points of the active selection is copied. This button corresponds to the Copy command in the Edit menu. Cuts the current selection from the edited clip. This command is similar to the Copy command, except the fact that the selection will be removed from the clip (the source file will not be modified, though). The remaining fragments on the left and the right side of the selected area will be joined together (concatenated). As a result, a new temporary file will be created and automatically opened for playback and editing. Since this operation may take a significant amount of time, a progress indicator will be displayed showing the percentage of the job done. This button corresponds to the Cut command in the Edit menu. Pastes the previously copied MPEG stream fragment from the clipboard into the currently opened clip at the position marked by the slider. As a result, a new temporary file will be created and automatically opened for playback and editing. Since this operation may take a significant amount of time, a progress indicator will be displayed showing the percentage of the job done. This button corresponds to the Paste from Clipboard command in the Edit menu. Similar to the Paste command, but the fragment will be inserted from another file (selected using the dialog that will be displayed) rather than from the clipboard. This button corresponds to the Paste from File command in the Edit menu. Saves the current selection into a separate file. The Save Selection dialog (see REF _Ref452681806 \h Figure 18) will be shown to allow you to select the destination file names and other options. This button corresponds to the Save Selection command in the Edit menu. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 18. MG100 Editor Save Selection dialog The dialog displays the selected fragment start position, end position and duration in hours:minutes:seconds.frames format and lets you select the output file name and location. There are only two stream types available here: a strict VideoCD compatible and a generic System Stream. The VideoCD stream type imposes certain restrictions on the MPEG video and audio streams, so the program will generate an error message if the parameters are incompatible and cannot be translated. In this case you have to use the more generic System Stream type, which allows combining virtually any elementary video and audio streams. Select the output file name in the File Name selection field and check the Open Result File checkbox, if you want the file to be opened for the editing and playback automatically. Press OK to start the output process. Since this operation may take a significant amount of time, a progress indicator will be displayed showing the percentage of the job done. Marks the starting point of the selection (fragment) at the current position of the slider (Mark In). The mark accuracy depends on the state of the Mark Alignment button (below). The space between current Mark In and Mark Out positions is typically shown in dark blue color. This button has no menu command equivalent. Marks the ending point of the selection (fragment) at the current position of the slider (Mark Out). The mark accuracy depends on the state of the Mark Alignment button (below). The space between current Mark In and Mark Out positions is typically shown in dark blue color. This button has no menu command equivalent. Selects the accuracy of Mark In and Mark Out commands. When this button is pressed, the mark position is aligned by Iframes in MPEG1 video stream. Iframes usually denote the beginning of the next GOP (Group Of Pictures) interval. Iframes are often thought of as key frames in the MPEG video. Normally, Iframes occur in the video stream every half-second or so. When this button is depressed (default), the mark position is aligned by the nearest Pframe in the MPEG video stream. Pframes are forward-predicted frames from the corresponding Iframes and serve as another reference point for bi-directional Bframes. The frequency of occurrence of Pframes is typically 3-4 times higher than that of Iframes. Refer to the REF _Ref452683655 \h \* MERGEFORMAT MPEG Editing Tips and Considerations below for more information on the pros and cons of each of these positioning modes. This button has no menu command equivalent. Several additional service commands accessible through the menu are listed and described below. The default settings will be adequate for the most cases; however, you may consider these commands if the editing performance or convenience is an issue. The Clear Clipboard command in the Edit menu erases the information about the latest copied MPEG fragment from the clipboard. Even though the amount of data stored in clipboard for each file fragment is not big, it is advisable to clear the clipboard contents before proceeding with certain editing tasks. Finally, the About menu shows program version information and is very similar to the same menu available in the MPEG Capture mode (see page PAGEREF _Ref392329219 \h 19). MPEG Editing Tips and Considerations This section covers some known issues about MPEG editing operations. You are advised to read this section carefully to make the editing process fast, efficient and error-free. You can easily combine two or more MPEG files into one by using the Paste from File command from the Edit menu or by pressing the button. The content of another file is pasted to the file that is being edited at the position determined by the position slider. MPEG files being concatenated should have the same or similar bitrate. The audio parameters of two files also should be strictly the same in order to avoid error messages during editing or problems during playback. Keep in mind that many small fragments inserted one by one into a file, may result in audio/video synchronization (lip sync) problems due to inherent and unavoidable small discrepancies in length between the elementary video and audio streams. In general, try to minimize editing iterations of a single file, as each iteration increases the chances of video quality reduction or other undesirable side effects. One or more Bframes may be dropped from the edited MPEG video stream depending on how the target bitrate constraints are satisfied. A large number of dropped frames may be noticeable as slight motion jerkiness around the junction point. When the button is pressed (alignment to Iframes mode) the editing process is optimized for retaining the maximum video quality in expense of positioning accuracy. When the button is not pressed the positioning accuracy in the video stream is higher, but since partial MPEG re-compression is required, quality can be compromised. When marking a selection, the proper mark alignment is always performed so that the selected area is expanded. That is, the opening mark is aligned toward the beginning of the file, and the closing mark is aligned toward the end of the file. You will need to use a special audio editing package in order to edit an elementary MPEG audio track. One of the recommended packages is Cool Edit 96 by Syntrillium Software Corp. It can be downloaded from Syntrillium WWW site at http://www.syntrillium.com/ The audio track can be separated from the system stream MPEG file using the MPEG Stream Demultiplexer utility program provided with MPEGator100 software package. See section REF _Ref393233176 \n 5.2.2 for details. The audio track is never re-compressed during editing. It is cut or joined by the minimum accessible unit called frame. The audio frame is roughly 26 milliseconds long regardless the bitrate. When performing complex editing operations, it is highly recommended to have sufficient amount of free disk space available. The sufficient amount is usually twice the size of the movie clip that is being edited. Useful MPEG tools The MG100 software package includes two easy to use MPEG stream multiplexer and demultiplexer utilities. The former lets you combine separate elementary MPEG video and audio streams into a single system stream file with synchronized video and audio contents. The latter performs the opposite task, that splits a multiplexed MPEG system stream file into two (or more) elementary MPEG video and audio streams. MPEG Stream Multiplexer program The programs main dialog is shown in REF _Ref452684603 \h Figure 19 REF _Ref452684616 \p \h below. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 19. MPEG Stream Multiplexer main dialog To combine elementary MPEG video and audio streams into a single system stream file you need to select two sources (one for video, another for audio) and one destination file name and location. You can do this by clicking on the corresponding file selection buttons or directly typing the location and file name in the corresponding editing fields. You may see all important parameters of the input video and audio streams by clicking on the Info... button (the example of the Stream Information dialog is shown in REF _Ref452684930 \h Figure 20). Note that the total bitrate of the output file is always the sum of the video and audio bitrates plus small percentage of extra data required for audio/video synchronization information. The total length (duration) of the output MPEG system stream is determined by the shortest source stream. You cannot change any of the streams parameters here so all you need to do is to press the Start button to begin multiplexing. This process is usually performed significantly faster than real time speed, so you will be able to check the results soon. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 20. Information on the elementary video and audio streams MPEG Stream Demultiplexer program The programs main dialog is shown in REF _Ref452685296 \h Figure 21 REF _Ref452685316 \p \h below. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 21. MPEG Stream Demultiplexer main dialog Start by the selecting an input file among MPEG video/audio (system stream) files (they typically have the .MPG or .MP2 extensions). You can do this either by typing the file name and path in the Input File editing field or by pressing the button next to it. Then specify the Output Path and optional part of the resulting file name. Note that you do not need to specify the complete output file name and extension because a two-letter suffix will be appended to it according to the specific codes assigned to elementary video and audio streams that made up the system stream. Usually, an MPEG system stream consists of one video and one audio streams with internal stream ID codes set to E0 and C0 (hexadecimal) respectively. So the output file names will be padded with E0 and C0 suffixes and the corresponding extension (.MPG for video and .MP2 for audio). For example, if you have specified the output file name as test, you will get files named teste0.mpg and testc0.mp2 as the output of the demultiplexer. The demultiplexing process will begin as soon as you hit the Start button. Typically, this operation is performed at speed much faster than real time. You can also view the structure of the input system stream file and data on each of the elementary streams present in the input file by clicking on the Info button. A dialog similar to one shown in REF _Ref452685952 \h Figure 22 will appear. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 22. Stream Info dialog As soon as you press the Info button, the program will start demultiplexing the entire input file trying to find as many elementary video and audio streams as possible (some elementary streams may begin in the middle of the system stream) as well as their precise length (duration). A progress bar will be shown, indicating that the process is running. You can terminate it at any time by pressing the Cancel button and the program will display the information about elementary streams that it had gathered so far. TROUBLESHOOTING The MG100 hardware and software are designed to be almost trouble-free. Hardware conflicts are almost eliminated by using Windows95/98 and PCI bus Plug and Play capabilities. Most of the MG100 software error messages are self-explanatory and do not have to be described thoroughly. However, some cases (mostly concerning the proper software installation and first-time operation) are covered in this section to help solve potential problems. Possible system bottlenecks Please consider the following list of system-wide problems that are not directly related to MG100 but will significantly deteriorate its performance and cause other undesired effects. Common problems and solutions This section addresses the common problems, which may arise during the installation and first-time operation. Please read this section carefully before contacting Technical Support. The hardware can not be detected or initialized properly Run Windows95/98 Control Panel, double click on the System icon and then click on the Device Manager tab. You will see the structured list of hardware installed in your computer. Normally the window shows only existing device classes (e.g. Display Adapters, Hard Disk Controllers, etc.) hiding the devices themselves. However, some devices may be preceded with a yellow exclamation mark (!). That means either a hardware conflict, malfunction, or, in some cases, software drivers error has occurred. Check if MG100 is displayed in this way. If it is, then the system could not allocate enough resources for the MPEGator100 hardware. The most scarce PCs resource is IRQ numbers. Windows95/98s failure to allocate one for the MG100 means that either all physical IRQs are occupied by other devices or (most likely) the number of IRQs available for the PCI bus is not sufficient (should be greater or equal to the number of PCI slots in the system). First, try to pull out one of the cards from your computer and see if it helps (start with the sound card, as they sometime take two different IRQs). If this does not help, access your computers CMOS Setup program. Go to the menu concerning the PCI devices and select automatic assignment of IRQs for them (if applicable). For a detailed description how to do this, consult your computers manual or the manufacturers technical support. A message saying Plug and Play installation was not performed correctly appears Refer to the previous two cases and section REF _Ref357175155 \r \h 3.2 on page PAGEREF _Ref357175155 \h 12 for remedies. I see no error messages, but neither preview nor capture work In Windows95/98: First, make sure that the MG100 line in the Device Manager list has no yellow exclamation mark (!), and the Device is working properly (after double-clicking on it to see the properties sheet). Refer to the previous solutions for details. This kind of behavior is most likely resulted from IRQ conflict or sharing problem between MG100 card and other onboard or add-on PCI or AGP devices. You can view all IRQ assignments in the system using Windows95/98 Device Manager (Control Panel ( System ( Device Manager) by double-clicking on the tiny Computer icon at the top. The MG100 card should never be using the same IRQ number with any other device in the system (except for IRQ holder for PCI steering, which is not really a device). Also, make absolutely sure that all PCI, AGP and other Plug-and-Play devices in the system (including the IRQ holder for PCI steering pseudo-device) are configured for automatic configuration. To resolve the conflict try moving the MG100 card into any other PCI slots. Depending on motherboard design and system BIOS implementation some PCI slots maybe hardwired to share IRQ lines with onboard devices such SCSI, USB controllers, network or display adapters or AGP slots. If this does not help, you will need to change IRQ configuration of PCI cards and onboard devices in your system. It is important to realize that you cannot change IRQ assignments for PCI cards in Windows95 or Windows98. This can be done only by using the PCI/PnP configuration or similar menu in BIOS CMOS Setup program invoked at the boot time. Below are some generic hints. The menu items may be slightly different on your PC. Note: This is not a problem of MG100 driver or hardware, but a rather typical IRQ conflict situation that occurs whenever you add yet another device to your PC. Set the PnP OS Installed parameter (if available) to NO and the Reset Configuration Data parameter (if available) to YES. Switch to manual configuration mode (if applicable) and set one of the IRQs that you want to reserve for MG100 card to Legacy ISA/non-PnP mode. Save changes in CMOS settings. Turn your system off and take the MG100 card out. Turn the system on and load Windows95/98. Check with its Device Manager if IRQ assignments have become less crowded and the IRQ number that you just reserved is not shown among the occupied ones. Shutdown and turn off the system again and put the MG100 card back. Go to the BIOS CMOS Setup program and switch the reserved IRQ line back to the PCI/PnP mode before loading Windows95/98. The MG100 device should now take that IRQ line exclusively. If it did not, remove the MG100 line using the Device Manager (as shown in REF _Ref354778182 \h Figure 6) and restart Windows. Finally, it will definitely help if you disable some of the integrated PC peripherals from the Integrated Peripherals or similar menu in the BIOS CMOS Setup program. In particular, try disabling one or more Serial (COM) or Printer (LPT) ports. You may also disable the USB and/or the Secondary IDE controller if needed. To achieve the maximum effect, try setting the PnP OS Installed parameter (if available) to NO and the Reset Configuration Data parameter (if available) to YES. In WindowsNT: You can see the configuration of all devices in WindowsNT by running the Windows NT Diagnostics program from the Programs(Administrative tools menu. Then select the Resources tab and locate the mtrIIpnp line that represents MPEGator100 hardware in the system. Note that many modern Pentium/Pentium Pro/Pentium II systems come with built-in USB controller. Although the controller is physically present and enabled by system BIOS, it is not recognized and shown anywhere by WindowsNT 4.0 operating system. It is a common feature of many PC mainboard implementations that the USB controller is always sharing IRQ with one of the PCI slots. Therefore, you may run into a hidden IRQ sharing problem, but Windows NT will not show this to you! Some computer BIOSes display a system configuration summary at boot time. If the summary information is available, note which IRQs are used by all PCI devices including the onboard IDE and USB controllers. The MG100 is typically displayed there as a Multimedia Device with Vendor ID equal to 0x1050 and System ID equal to 0x9922 (both values are hexadecimal). To resolve the potential conflict try moving the MG100 card into any other PCI slots. It is important to realize that there is no way to change IRQ assignments for PCI cards in WindowsNT. This can be done only by using the PCI/PnP configuration or similar menu in BIOS CMOS Setup program invoked at the boot time. It will definitely help if you disable some of the integrated PC peripherals from the Integrated Peripherals or similar menu in the BIOS CMOS Setup program. In particular, try disabling one or more Serial (COM) or Printer (LPT) ports. You may also disable the USB and/or the Secondary IDE controller if needed. To achieve the maximum effect, try setting the PnP OS Installed parameter (if available) to NO (since WindowsNT 4.0 is not a PlugandPlay operating system!). Also, switch the Reset Configuration Data parameter (if available) to YES. I always get MMSYSTEM296 ... error whenever Im trying to playback MPEG files This message is produced by Windows95/98 or WindowsNT multimedia subsystem, not by the MG100 software. It means that you do not have any MCI driver suitable for MPEG files playback (or the driver has failed during the initialization). The solution is to install (or re-install) any appropriate MCI driver for MPEG files playback. If none of the above describes or solves your problem, contact Darim Technical Support for assistance. How to get software updates and technical support The MG100 software is being constantly improved.
